California EP on Eat Sleep Breathe Music (01/06/2011)

(the) Silent Days are a French band from Belgium that play a relaxed and lush indie pop. They just released the California EP, and I must say it is quite the pleasant listen. Unfortunately, that’s about all I can say. There isn’t anything inherently wrong with this band, but they simply don’t make a lasting impression. Julien Bouchard, band leader, just writes quaint songs that seem like great open mic night material. While the tunes are good, they are ultimately not catchy enough.

Derrière ce patronyme fleurant bon la Perfide Albion se cache en fait un quatuor typiquement ‘frenchie’, importé en ligne directe d’Epinal, petite ville vosgienne, à mi-distance entre Strasbourg et Dijon. De ce coin-là ne peuvent émerger que de bons crus…

(The) Silent Days est un quatuor, mais la tête pensante du combo se nomme Julien Bouchard, au four et au moulin et dans tous les bons coups, tant à l’écriture des textes qu’aux compositions musicales. Mais lorsque la troupe est réunie, elle manifeste une efficacité et une complicité redoutables.

(the) silent days, California: Near as I can tell, (the) silent days are from Belgium (thought please, someone, correct me if I’m wrong) and their latest EP, California is loaded with sunny, guitar-based pop songs sure to please fans of, say, Marching Band or any of the Peter, Bjorn & John songs that don’t have whistling. The premium here is on tunefulness – hooky choruses that work their way into your brain slowly. Charming!

(The) Silent Days : About the AB gig on Music In Belgium (02/12/2010)

Sans grande surprise, ce concert affichait complet et on était curieux de voir si le regain de forme affiché lors des précédentes prestations scéniques (en mars 2008 dans la même salle et quelques mois plus tard au Pukkelpop) allait se confirmer. Mais avant de juger sur pièces, place à une première partie, The Silent Days. Un groupe on ne peut plus british (le style, l'attitude, l'accent) à la différence essentielle qu'ils sont français et assez implantés en Belgique. En effet, leur premier album, "I Am Nothing" est distribué par le label hutois Anorak Supersport.

Sur scène, ils sont déjà bien aguerris et leurs influences plutôt crasseuses du début des 90's (Dinosaur Jr, Lemonheads) en un peu plus poppy sont étonnamment limpides grâce à un son réglé à la perfection (pour un groupe de support). Ajoutons-y la voix assurée et le jeu de guitare sans faille de leur leader Julien Bouchard et on arrive à une prestation qui, sans être révolutionnaire, aura convaincu. Cerise sur le gâteau, cette excellente cover du "Chapel Hill" de Sonic Youth, une autre de leurs influences majeures. A ce moment, on ne le savait pas encore, mais on avait intérêt à en avoir bien profité…
